Feedback

For my composition Algorithm II, I searched extensively for ways to get good sounds by applying feedback techniques to digital delay lines. To start somewhere, I made a MAXpatch that was described in the book ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND SOUND DESIGN by Alessandro Cipriani and Maurizio Giri. (www.virtual-sound.com). This yielded remarkable results

I then experimented further by modifying the patch and also building my own patch from scratch. It turned out to be a difficult way to control sound synthesis. Nevertheless, the resulting sounds were amazing.

Example

On Youtube, I found an instructional video of a certain Matthieu Pernaud who gave a demonstration of this technique. I also started experimenting with this patch. With the sounds I got from it, I made the videoclip on this page (video below).

Skrewell

Native Instruments, a software maker who made the visual programming language Reaktor, included the Skrewell synthesizer as a demo. This also worked on the basis of feedback synthesis. I started experimenting with it and apart from the sounds, Skrewell also delivered very nice images via the oscilloscope in the software.

Chaos as a present

At a small party around that time, I gave some nice images to my fellow guests as a present. I still have to smile at the cautious reactions when they not only received the image but also the sound that went with it. You can see the images on this page
